Using our information

Sparrow Line provides general birdwatching information for New York City and New York State. Use it to help plan a visit, compare observations or choose equipment. We cannot guarantee that every detail is complete, accurate or current.

Our editorial team writes the texts with help from AI tools and checks them against the sources listed under each article. Errors can still occur. Send corrections to [email protected].

Seasonal lists and identification suggestions

The Seasonal NYC Bird Checklist describes species expected in a selected month and area. Its status words describe seasonal expectations, not the chance of seeing a bird on a particular visit. A listed species may be absent when you visit. A species missing from the results may still occur.

The checklist uses our report index from the eBird Observation Dataset, provided by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology through GBIF, for 2021 to 2025. We rebuild the data yearly. It is not a live sightings service.

What Bird Did You See? ranks up to eight candidates from the clues you enter. Its results are identification suggestions, not confirmed records. Uncertain observations, similar species and incomplete clues can affect the ranking. Compare the suggested field marks and look-alikes with what you actually observed. A no-match result does not establish that a species is absent from the area.

Equipment and feeding guidance

The Binocular Specification Chooser provides specification ranges and specification matches. Matches are not tested winners. Manufacturer-stated eye relief does not guarantee comfortable use with eyeglasses. Check the seller's current specifications, price and purchase terms before buying.

The Feeder and Food Matcher cannot guarantee that birds will visit or that squirrels will be excluded. Resolve installation permission, cleaning access and window-collision precautions before putting up a feeder. Follow applicable official feeding advisories. The absence of a recorded advisory does not establish that feeding is safe.

Outdoor access and your responsibilities

Before traveling, verify opening hours, closures, permits and access rules with the park or property operator. Check current transit service with the transit operator. A location mentioned on Sparrow Line does not grant permission to enter it.

Operators can change access or restrict activities. Their current rules and posted instructions take precedence over our descriptions.

You are responsible for choosing a route and activities suited to the conditions and your abilities. Stay out of closed areas and private property unless you have permission. Observe birds without disturbing them, their nests or other wildlife. Follow local rules on feeding and equipment use.

Reusing text, images and tool results

You may read our pages and print or save copies of our original text and tool results for your personal, noncommercial use. Keep source credits and any license notices with those copies.

Permission to use a tool result does not make its suggestions a verified identification, sighting record or product endorsement.
