About Sparrow Line

Sparrow Line is an independent birding guide for beginning and experienced birdwatchers in New York City, and for balcony and backyard birdwatchers across the NYC metro area and New York State. We focus on seasonal expectations, transit-accessible birding, practical identification, equipment and feeding information.

How we produce the information

The editorial team writes the texts with help from AI tools and checks them against the sources listed under each article.

Our seasonal guide includes the Seasonal NYC Bird Checklist. Its report index uses the eBird Observation Dataset from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, accessed through GBIF under CC BY 4.0. The records cover 2021 to 2025. OpenStreetMap park outlines are used only to query the records.

We rebuild the checklist data yearly from GBIF. Results describe species expected in a selected month and area, with the status words common, fairly common, uncommon or rare. These are seasonal expectations, not promises of a sighting.

The bird finder in our identification section matches observations to species traits and seasonal data. Its trait list (size, colors, places, shape, one field mark) was compiled by the editors with AI assistance from field-guide descriptions: two models described each species independently, only the values both gave were kept, and the editor reviewed disagreements. Treat a match as a suggestion to check, not an identification.

What specification-based equipment research means

Our binocular guidance uses Audubon's selection rules and standard optics formulas. The binocular chooser considers where you bird, eyeglasses, budget and carry weight.

It suggests a size to start with (for example 8x42) and the specs to check on a maker's sheet: exit pupil, field of view, eye relief and waterproofing. Manufacturer-stated eye relief does not guarantee a comfortable fit with eyeglasses.

Its suggestion is our rule of thumb, not a test result. We do not rank named models and we do not test binoculars.

How we review feeding guidance

The Feeder and Food Matcher in our backyard section uses Audubon feeder and food information alongside species traits and seasonal data.

Its food and placement notes quote Audubon, with the source shown in the tool. Check local advisories from wildlife agencies before you feed birds.

Feeding recommendations require permission to install a feeder, access for regular cleaning and window-collision precautions. Attraction and squirrel exclusion are never guaranteed. The absence of a recorded advisory does not establish that feeding is safe.
